A Shorter & Son Stoke-on-Trent purse shell shape container or letter holder with black stamp & incised marks, pattern No 3191/S.
 
Medium  : Pottery, earthenware, pearl coloured glaze, shell design.
Circ        : 1900-1950.
Cond't    Excellent with no damage.
Size/D   : 7.5" (19cm) Long x 5" (12.7cm) High x 2" (5.1cm) Wide.
 
Shorter and Son Ltd. was an old pottery company founded by Arthur Shorter and his partner James Boulton in Stoke on Trent, in 1878. Arthur was asked to manage his brother-in-law A. J. Wilkinson's pottery after his death. Wilkinson had set up his pottery in Burslem in 1885. In 1916 both Arthur?s sons namely Colley and Guy became the directors of the company and the same year Clarice Cliff was employed in the company as the decorator.
